When Coworkers Act Like Haters Instead of Teammates

Hayley Bryant's Blog | When Coworkers Act Like Haters Instead of Teammates

Let me tell y’all something I’ve learned working in sales — especially the car business.

This job will show you exactly who people are.

Now don’t get me wrong, the car industry can be one of the most fun places to work. Every day is different. One minute you’re laughing with a customer about their trade-in smelling like wet dog, the next minute you’re celebrating someone driving off in their dream truck. 🚗💨

But there’s one thing that can ruin a good workplace faster than a bad credit score on a Saturday deal…

Coworkers who would rather hate than help.

The Energy You Bring Matters

In any workplace you’ve got two types of people.

Type one:

The ones who clap when you win.

They celebrate your deal.

They give you tips.

They say “Good job!” when you sell something.

Then there’s type two.

The ones watching your deals like a hawk.

Counting your commissions.

Talking behind your back.

Waiting for you to mess up.

And the crazy part?

Most of the time the people acting like haters don’t even realize how much better life would be if they just supported others instead.

Because success isn’t a pie with only a few slices.

Just because someone else sells a truck doesn’t mean there isn’t another one on the lot for you.

Trust me… Ford didn’t build just one F-150.

Competition Is Healthy… Hate Is Not

A little competition can be a good thing.

It pushes you to work harder.

To learn more.

To sharpen your skills.

But there’s a difference between competition and jealousy.

Competition says:

“Watch me catch up.”

Jealousy says:

“I hope they fail.”

And that mindset will drain the energy out of a workplace faster than a dead battery in January.

The Best Teams Lift Each Other Up

The best teams I’ve ever seen aren’t full of people trying to tear each other down.

They’re full of people saying things like:

  • “Go close that deal!”
  • “You got this!”
  • “Let me help you with that customer.”

Those are the teams that make money.

Those are the teams customers feel comfortable around.

And those are the teams that actually enjoy coming to work every day.

Because when people feel supported, they perform better.

Be the Person Who Brings the Good Energy

Here’s something I’ve learned:

You can’t control how other people act.

But you can control the energy you bring into the room.

You can be the person who:

  • celebrates other people’s wins
  • helps the new person learn the ropes
  • keeps the workplace positive
  • chooses kindness over gossip

And the funny thing is…

Those people almost always end up being the most successful anyway.

Why?

Because customers can feel genuine energy.

People want to work with someone who is positive, helpful, and real.

Final Thoughts

Life’s too short to spend it being bitter over someone else’s success.

If someone around you is winning, learn from them instead of hating on them.

Clap for people.

Encourage people.

Lift people up.

Because when one person grows, the whole team has the chance to grow too.

And who knows…

One day you might need someone cheering for your deal. 😉
